The London Team

Kate Elliott

Kate joined the team in 2019. She has over ten years’ experience of handling both finance and children disputes at top-tier family practices in London and Hertfordshire. She has particular expertise in cases involving businesses, trusts and partnerships and cases where one party is at risk of bankruptcy or insolvency.

Kate is a former member of the London YRes committee and has undertaken specialist accreditation with Resolution.  She is also a trained family mediator.  She has written widely on the subject of family law, including in the Family Law Journal.

Kate has been a regular feature in the legal directories for some time.  In 2015 the Legal 500 noted that “her City experience means she is at the cutting edge” and Chambers UK 2016 reported “impressive levels of market approval. She is considered an ‘extremely good negotiator’ and someone who ‘prides herself on being on top of everything and one step ahead’”.  Chambers UK 2017 said that “she is excellent in negotiations, and able to resolve matters speedily and cost-effectively” while the 2018 Legal 500 described her as “a forward thinker who makes no decision without first contemplating all the potential consequences and fiercely protects her clients’ interests”.

Kate’s contacts praise her thoroughness and describe her as warm, bright and supportive.  She is celebrated for her tough but pragmatic negotiating style, although she is not afraid to take matters to court when required.

Gemma Vines

Gemma joined the team in 2018 from a highly regarded Central London firm where she handled most of their international children work.

Gemma is one of the leading associates dealing with children law issues in London and provides support to both our London and Brighton client bases.  She is a Resolution accredited specialist in both Private Law Children and Child Abduction.  She has a particular expertise in complex children matters involving issues relating to parental responsibility and parenting arrangements, children cases involving an international element including removal from the jurisdiction, child abduction and enforcement of foreign orders and surrogacy issues.

Gemma was first recognised by the Legal 500 in 2015, when she was just six years’ qualified.

Gemma represented the applicant husband in the leading case of Re D, concerning a father’s attempts to have his Romanian residence order recognised and enforced in England. The matter ultimately reached the Supreme Court and the decision is now the leading authority on the court’s powers on appeals under Brussels IIa. She has also been involved in several other complicated, reported children cases and continues to work at the cutting edge of children law.

Gemma is known for her integrity, her tenacity and for her ability to identify important legal points and advise clients sensibly on which to pursue.  Despite her string of reported cases she encourages, wherever possible, negotiated and agreed solutions that focus on minimising conflict and consider the needs of the whole family, in particular the best interests of children. Gemma’s focus is to provide advice which aims to achieve effective, long term solutions for her clients which empower them to move forward positively with their lives.

Gemma Garrett

Gemma is an associate solicitor specialising in family law, with a specific focus on financial claims; including some that have an international element. She also has experience in matters relating to children.

Gemma’s approach to family cases is sensible and effective.  She is driven by achieving the best possible outcome for her clients.
